The project at Phakisa Mine involved shaft rehabilitation through a self-mined area between 140 m to 180 m in depth.
This is an old rectangular shaft with six compartments which makes it unique to conventional shafts in the industry. The shaft was sunk in the 1940s and changed to a ventilation shaft in 2003.
A balloon and aerocrete expanding foam concrete were used for the project.
